Recruiting care staff, whether via a company or privately, can seem overwhelming. The person, or team, that you employ will be coming into your home to look after you or a loved one. Therefore, you want to ensure you choose the right person for the role. Home care allows you to remain living within your own home, but you need to make sure you will be both safe and comfortable with the staff who visit.
First and foremost, the care team you choose must be passionate about their role. While people work to earn a living, you don’t want someone who views you and your needs as a paycheque. If you wish to utilise a home care company, make sure this passion comes from the top down – where Directors and managers have the same passion and love for the business as you’d expect from care staff out in the field. The people who come into your home should be able to inject positivity into your day, making it that much brighter.
The role itself can be incredibly rewarding for both clients and staff alike. It allows an individual to benefit others, improving their quality of life while forging a genuine human connection. When choosing an individual or home care company, look for those who show a vested interest in you and your family, as people, rather than pushing paperwork from the first contact.
Both written and verbal communication are crucial in home care. Any care staff who come into your home need to be able to discuss the care they are giving with you and your family. Alongside this, they also need to be able to converse with you. We believe that home care visits should be professional, but not overly clinical. Being able to have a chat with your team is vital for building that working relationship. Our aim is that, over time, you will be able to view your care team as friends who come in to help you. At the root of this is the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
At the same time, your care team also need to consider their compliance. With any visit, they should be writing notes about what was completed during their time, including if goals were met and information regarding incidents, compliments, and complaints. This allows you to keep track of your care package and know exactly what has been carried out. For this to work, your care team need to be able to write legibly.
You want that reassurance that, if your home care visit is set for a certain time, your Healthcare Assistant will be there as scheduled. Of course, we understand that traffic issues and emergencies occur but, for the most part, your visits should take place as expected.
It is imperative that home care individuals understand the importance of arriving punctually for visits. While they shouldn’t be late, they also shouldn’t arrive too early. The aim of the visits is to make your life that bit easier, not to disrupt your day. At the same time, as long as care has been carried out correctly, the visit should also end as planned. This enables you to receive the care and support you require while still having the freedom to plan the rest of your day.
All of the Absolute home care team undergo training when they commence employment, regardless of their experience in the industry, as well as refreshers and additional, client-specific training as required. This is an essential part of the role, ensuring that all staff gain and retain the necessary skills to conduct their work in a safe and legal manner.
What really sets apart good and great home care staff is their willingness to go further. As with all aspects of life, it is those who strive to go further, do more, and are eager to learn who may be able to offer better care. Due to this, we look for candidates who are eager to soak up as much knowledge as possible, develop their skills, and build a career.
One of the biggest fears that many people have about home care can be about the honesty and integrity of the care staff who visit. All too often you hear about carers stealing from people who have placed their trust and wellbeing in their hands. When you consider that some home care clients will be incredibly vulnerable due to their diagnoses, including brain injury, or age if dealing with junior clients, it is clear why a firm and just moral compass is required.
You want someone who will be honest, whether that be about more training they require to meet the client’s needs, or even if they’ve accidentally broken something. They must also be willing and able to do the right thing, no matter how difficult it may be. A home care provider with morals won’t hesitate to make reports to safeguarding, adult/children’s services, or even report poor behaviour on the part of other care staff, visitors, and even family. If they aren’t willing to do so, then we would question their dedication to client safety.
While this may sound extreme, you need the peace of mind that you or your loved one will be protected as part of the care package.
Making the decision to implement home care to meet your needs is one that requires time and research. To discuss your needs and options, as well as to make sure the care you receive is warm, safe, and compliant, contact Absolute today.
